National Night Out
|
On a beautiful August 2nd evening, the Norridge and Harwood Heights Police Departments, in conjunction with the Villages of Norridge and Harwood Heights, Norwood Park Township, School Districts 79, 80, 86 & 234, the Norwood Park Fire Protection District, and the Norridge Park District, held their inaugural National Night Out. The event was attended by approximately 1,000 people - young and old alike. The NNO Committee would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to Police Chiefs Brian Goss and John DeVries, the men and women of the Norridge & Harwood Heights Police Departments, and the many volunteers, from both communities, who helped make this event such a success. It really did take a Village - make that two Villages, four school districts, a fire protection district, a township and a park district.

Snow Route Parking
Although no one wants to even talk about snow this early, snow route parking enforcement begins October 1st and continues until April 15th. Before the first measurable snow is upon us, we would like to take this time to remind you about the two different snow route designations and the regulations regarding them.
As a reminder, once the two inch threshold has been reached, the Village immediately activates the snow route hotline (708-583-5775), our website, Facebook and Instagram pages. You can find the maps for the two snow route areas, as well as any updated information on our home page, under the tab “Snow Route Maps & Information”.
Odd/Even Snow Route Area:
Last year, the Historic section of the Village, East of Harlem Avenue, the 8200 & 8300 blocks of Foster Avenue, and some streets near Leigh School began an odd/even snow removal restriction. Simply put, from Wednesday through Sunday, after two inches of snow has fallen, there is no parking from 8:00 A.M. – 1:00 P.M. on the side of the street with even addresses on even calendar dates and no parking on the side of the street with odd street addresses on odd calendar dates. These restrictions will remain in effect until the snow event is over and snow removal is completed. The most common questions we heard last year were:
Why Wednesday – Sunday only? Year round street maintenance restriction days in the historic section are Mondays and Tuesdays. You are already moving your cars for these days. NOTE: THE MAJORITY OF THIS CHANGE AFFECTS THE HISTORIC SECTION AND EAST OF HARLEM. IF YOU ARE IN THE AREA NEAR LEIGH SCHOOL THAT IS AFFECTED, YOUR STREET MAINTENANCE DAYS ARE WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY.
Where can I park my car? You may park your car on the opposite side of the street, or as you do on your street maintenance day.
Designated Snow Route Area:
This area, where houses have driveways, please utilize your driveway and move all cars off the street, after two inches of snow has fallen, until the snow event is over and snow removal is completed. By moving your cars, the plows can remove the snowfall before it freezes, which will eliminate any boulders being thrown back onto driveway aprons on street maintenance days.
Village Ordinance states that it is unlawful to rake leaves into the street. We are asking for the cooperation of all of our residents: PLEASE DO NOT RAKE LEAVES INTO THE STREETS!!!!! The leaves will block the sewers, plug the drains, cause damage to the street sweeper and create a safety hazard when wet or frost-covered. Put vines, brush, clippings or leaves in either appropriate paper bags or in properly marked yard waste containers. “Yard Waste Only” stickers are available, free of charge, at the Norridge Village Hall. With everyone’s help, we can keep our streets clean and neat. Yard waste pick-up ends Wednesday, November 30th. No yard waste will be picked up after this date.

On behalf of the Water Committee, we want to congratulate and thank all Norridge residents that participated in verifying their water service line. Due to your cooperation, we have verified 97% of water services. We still have 147 residences that did not respond, even after the second and final notice was mailed to them. These residences will now be put on the “not known/no response” list. Now the project plan can be completed and submitted to the I.E.P.A. Even more good news is that with the action that was taken by the Village, it should hopefully put us in a good position on the funding list. Now we wait. This will take awhile. Optimistically, we should have a response by March 2023. Once again, thank you to all that participated in this Village-wide effort.
The work of creating a new and improved website continues. The new, easy to navigate website will be well worth the wait. As part of this upgrade, the Village will be implementing an email communication tool called GovDelivery that will allow residents and visitors to subscribe to email updates on specific topics that are of interest to them, including this newsletter, which residents will have the option to receive via email. Don’t worry, paper versions will also be included in your bi-monthly water bill. Please visit our website now at www.villageofnorridge.com to sign-up for GovDelivery. At this time, you will only be able to register your email address to receive the October edition of the newsletter. As the weeks progress, additional information will be released through GovDelivery. Please add our new sending email address, norridgealerts@public.govdelivery.com to your email contacts/safe sender list so that our emails land in your inbox when we begin to send out emails.
The Village of Norridge will hold its Fall Clean Up week October 10th - 14th. On your regular garbage day you may dispose of garbage and general rubbish, furniture, appliances (never leave doors on any discarded appliances). ITEMS NOT ACCEPTED: tires, lawn mowers, hazardous waste, electronics, building and remodeling materials, furnaces and air conditioning units.
The Fall Electronics & Recycling Event will be held on October 15, 2022 from 9:00 A.M. - 1:00 P.M. for Norridge residents only. At the Montrose Police Garage, 4348 N. Ottawa Avenue, you may drop off all electronics. CRT, flat screens, projection T.V.’s and monitors will be accepted for $20 per unit. Cash or credit cards only, no checks. We will also accept old bicycles at this location. Please stay in your car and one of our volunteers will remove your electronics from your car. At the Norridge Village Hall, 4000 N. Olcott Avenue, we will offer paper shredding, prescription and over-the-counter drugs, ink jets, toner cartridges, cell phones, gym shoes, flags and eye glasses drop-off. Please stay in your car and one of our volunteers will remove everything from your car. If you have any questions, please contact the Village Hall at 708-453-0800.

Let the neighborhood “haunting” begin for the most spooktacular front lawns and porches! Residents of single family homes within the corporate limits of the Village of Norridge are invited to participate, or nominate a neighbor’s house that they feel is worthy of being recognized. Judging will be based on “curb appeal” as viewed from the street. Only those decorations located on the street side of the property will be judged (corner lots may be judged from both streets.) Judges will not enter property to view. Judging will take place from October 26th-30th. Participants should ensure that all lights, animations and decorations are in place and activated between 7:00 P.M. and 10:00 P.M. All decorating must be done by the resident living in the home, not a professional decorator or designer. Businesses, Village employees and their immediate families are not eligible to participate. Applications can be found on our website at www.villageofnorridge.com or at the Norridge Village Hall. Deadline to enter 5:00 P.M. Monday, October 24th.
