May is Building Safety Month: Create a Emergency Home Exit Plan
The month of May is Building Safety Month and the Village of Lemont Building Department will be sharing some great safety and building permit information throughout the month.
Last week you made your disaster plan, but have you taken a good hard look at your home to make sure you can safely exit the home in the event of an emergency, such as a fire? Do you have a clear path to the exits? If you don’t, spring is a great time to declutter and create those safe exit pathways. Involve your children and make sure they understand the ways they can safely exit the home, including their bedroom, in the event of an emergency.
Don’t forget to bring the latest coloring page to the Building Department at Village Hall for your Junior Code Official Certificate and to be entered to win a Three Stories Books gift card!
This Friday: Raise Money for Special Olympics with Dunkin' Cop on a Rooftop

There may be a few local Special Olympians present at the 127th Street location as well. This year marks the 21st year that Law Enforcement Officers have partnered with Dunkin’ to raise awareness and much needed funds for the 24,000 active participants of Special Olympics Illinois. The Lemont Police Department will be joined with 150 agencies across Illinois to raise $1.25 million over seven hours.
Here is how you can help: ● Stop by our locations and make a donation from 6:00 a.m. to approximately 11:00 a.m. There will be Merchandise and Coupons for FREE Coffee and Donuts to hand out for donations. ● Spread the word! Tell your friends/co-workers/family/neighbors or anyone that will listen about the event. ● Sponsor our location! If your business donates $1000 or more during this event your business will be spotlighted on the @IllinoisLETR and @SpecialOlympicsIllinois Social Media platforms and will be added to the 2025 Law Enforcement Torch Run T-Shirt!

Cicadas are Coming! What you need to know.
If you have been following any news on the emerging cicada brood, you will know that they are popping out in our surrounding suburbs. Maybe you have even seen them in Lemont. Take it from the Cook County Forest Preserve (FPDCC) article, The Cicadas are Coming! And You Should Hear Them, Not Fear Them! The FPDCC article states in part, Homeowners who would like to protect their newly planted saplings and young trees can place netting with holes no more than ¼-inch wide over it—just do it soon, before you hear the males start to sing. But Almassi urges Cook County residents not to spray pesticides or insecticides to try to protect your trees. “Cicadas are food for wildlife and even your pet dogs,” she says. “You don’t want to poison them. And [pesticides] won’t work anyway.”
You can also get involved by recording and submitting cicada songs and photos using the iNaturalist app. Visit the article for more information and to sign up to participate - Help the Forest Preserves 'Map' the Sounds of Cicadas.
