Lake County Reports Progress on Strategic Plan

Lake County’s Strategic Plan, which serves as our road map over the next several years, identifies five strategic goals related to transportation, sustainability, healthy communities, economic opportunities and public safety. Residents helped shape the plan by providing input at a series of community forums. Residents also said they wanted to stay informed on progress being made toward these goals. In an effort to be more accountable, accessible and transparent, we’ve posted our progress here.

Lake County Division of Transportation Recognition

As the Chair of the Public Works and Transportation Committee, I am happy to announce that the Lake County Division of Transportation has been recognized by the Chicago Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA). The APWA has selected the Fairfield Road at IL Route 176 Improvement as their Project of the Year, for transportation projects of $5M, but less than $25MThe improvements at Fairfield Road and IL Route 176 included a widening and reconstruction of the intersection, trail enhancements to the Millennium Trail multi-use path within Lakewood Forest Preserve and two trail underpasses so that pedestrians don’t have to cross at the widened intersection.

In addition, APWA has named Jon Nelson as the Professional Manager of the Year, Engineering and Technology. Under Jon’s leadership, LCDOT is using technology like never before to move traffic efficiently and help residents get where they're going. We continue to expand our PASSAGE system interconnecting traffic signals along highway corridors as well as providing live, local traffic info on www.lakecountypassage.com, email traffic alerts, and PASSAGE smartphone apps.

Exploring Lake County History through the Stories of Children
Have you ever wondered what life was like for children in the past? Opening March 14 at the Lake County Discovery MuseumGrowing Up in Lake County shares the everyday and extraordinary stories of children who grew up in the county. Try your hand at living and working on a pioneer homestead. Discover what life was like for a young drummer boy in the Civil War. Learn about the first African-American family to settle in the county. Attend school in a one-room schoolhouse and play as children did over 100 years ago. Through real artifacts, historical accounts and hands-on experiences, children connect the stories of the past to their own lives in this new exhibition for families.

Grave Marker Found in Preserve Returned to Ohio Home
A grave marker found in Cuba Marsh Forest Preserve (Barrington) has been returned to its rightful home in Ohio thanks to the combined efforts of Forest Preserve Ranger Erik Tjarksen, Lake County Discovery Museum Collections Coordinator Diana Dretske, local historian Nancy Schumm, and Harrison Township (Ohio) trustee Joe Buck. The stone marker, discovered by Ranger Tjarksen last July, belongs to Darcy Wilson, an infant who passed away in 1889 in what is now Champaign County, Ohio. Dretske was able to research and identify the original location of the marker, and contact the descendants of the family and to arrange for its return. It is not known how the grave marker traveled 300 miles from the burial site.
