Public Meeting for Lewis Avenue Planning Study
What should Lewis Avenue look like in the future?
The Lake County Division of Transportation (LCDOT) is beginning a study of Lewis Avenue, from Sunset Avenue to IL 173, to identify potential improvements that could address safety concerns and improve travel for everyone who uses it.
Approximately 20,000 vehicles travel this section of Lewis Avenue each day, and more than 1,000 crashes occurred over five years, including multiple fatalities.
Now, we want to hear from you. If you live, work or travel along Lewis Avenue, join us for the first public meeting to share your experiences, concerns and ideas about how the corridor could be improved.
No specific improvements have been decided at this stage. The purpose of this study is to determine what improvements may be feasible.

About the Public Meeting
The meeting will be held in an open house format, so you can stop by anytime between 5 and 7 p.m. There will be no formal presentation, and you do not need to stay for the entire meeting.
At the meeting, you can:
- Share your experiences and concerns along Lewis Avenue
- Learn about current conditions
- Talk directly with members of the project team and ask questions
This meeting will be accessible to individuals with disabilities. Anyone needing special assistance should contact Dan Smith at dsmith@lakecountyil.gov at least five days before the meeting.
Public comments can be made in writing during the meeting. From October 1-28, public comments can be sent by email and through the online comment form at LewisAveSunsetTo173.com to be included in the public record.
A Separate Lewis Avenue Study
*This is a new study of the Lewis Avenue section from Sunset Avenue to IL 173. It is separate from the ongoing Lewis Avenue study between IL 137 and Belvidere Road, which has been underway for a few years.
