Public Hearing Scheduled on Proposed Data Center Moratorium in Unincorporated Areas
The Lake County Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, August 18, at 1 p.m. to consider text amendments and to gather public input on a proposed temporary moratorium on data centers in unincorporated Lake County.

Location: Lake County Central Permit Facility, 500 W. Winchester Road, Libertyville
The public hearing will focus specifically on the proposed moratorium and the text amendments being considered to establish it. Lake County only has the authority to impose a moratorium in the unincorporated areas. In reviewing the text amendments, the ZBA will consider the following topics:
- Whether Lake County should establish a temporary moratorium on data centers in unincorporated areas.
- If so, whether a proposed 8-month timeframe for the moratorium is the appropriate duration.
Members of the public are encouraged to provide input to the ZBA as they consider the proposal.
If adopted, a temporary moratorium would give Lake County time to evaluate data centers as an emerging land use, assess potential infrastructure, environmental and other impacts, and identify best practices that could assist Lake County in drafting future regulations and restrictions on data center development.
Lake County has not received any proposals to develop a data center in unincorporated Lake County. This public hearing does not address the approval or denial of any specific project.

Residents who are unable to attend the public hearing may submit comments online. Comments received by 5 p.m. on Friday, August 14, 2026, will be provided to the ZBA for consideration as part of the public hearing process.
