New Flashing Yellow Arrow Signals Activated on Arlington Heights Road
The Lake County Division of Transportation (LCDOT) has activated new traffic signals featuring flashing yellow arrows at the intersection of Arlington Heights Road and Checker Road as part of the Arlington Heights Road Reconstruction Project, which is nearing completion.
Flashing yellow arrows provide a safer and more efficient way for motorists to make left turns at signalized intersections than the traditional yield-on-green ball signal configuration. A decade-long study by the Federal Highway Administration found that intersections with flashing yellow arrows experience fewer crashes, while research conducted by Bradley University showed a 32% reduction in left-turn-related crashes. LCDOT began installing flashing yellow arrows on County highways in 2022 and continues to expand their use at intersections where they can improve safety and operations.
"Modern traffic signals are an important part of building a safer and more efficient transportation network," said Jon Nelson, Assistant County Engineer for LCDOT. "Flashing yellow arrows help drivers make better decisions by clearly indicating when it's safe to proceed after yielding to oncoming traffic, pedestrians and bicyclists."
When approaching a flashing yellow arrow, motorists should slow down, yield to oncoming vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians, then make a left turn only when it is safe to do so.
