Hate Crime Charges Filed Against Man for Posting Alarming and Disturbing Sign
Derek Webb
(Lake County, IL) Today, Derek Webb was arrested and charged with one count of a Hate Crime (Class 4 Felony) and one count of Disorderly Conduct (Class C Misdemeanor) for allegedly making direct threats against Latino and immigrant members of our community. Specifically, Webb is alleged to have posted a bullseye sign which included handwritten words saying “Good Shot ICE.”
Lake County State's Attorney Eric Rinehart issued the following statement:
"
I want to thank the Waukegan Police Department, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the Gurnee Police Department, and the Lindenhurst Police Department for their work in identifying this offender and collecting the evidence across dozens of scenes. I also want to thank our federal partners with whom we have been consulting with respect to threat assessment.
Finally, I’d like to express my gratitude to the brave members of the community who came forward to stand against this hate. Like all of us, these members of the community hope for a brighter future in which hate is forever extinguished from our community. Hate must have no home in Lake County."
Mr. Webb appeared in First Appearance Court this afternoon. The State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to detain in light of the seriousness of these charges. A detention hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, July 1, at 1:30 p.m.
This remains an ongoing investigation throughout multiple jurisdictions.
