Attend a Live Reading of the Declaration of Independence
Lake County invites residents to help celebrate America 250 with a special live event: a public reading of the Declaration of Independence. This free event is open to all.
Bring your family and friends as we gather to close out Lake County’s America 250 celebration and reflect on the enduring ideals of independence, self-government and civic responsibility that continue to shape our country.
Date: Wednesday, July 8, 2026 Time: Noon to 1 pm Where: Lincoln Plaza, 65 N Martin Luther King Jr Avenue, Waukegan Parking: View parking options
On July 8, Lake County will conduct a public reading of the Declaration of Independence, honoring the day in 1776 when it was first read aloud to a crowd in Philadelphia, PA. The event will also feature a history lesson marking America’s founding and 250th anniversary, with connections to Illinois and Lake County.
This event concludes a series of programs Lake County has held to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary. Earlier this year, Lake County students participated in the America 250 Art & Essay Contest, residents took part in the Lake County Independence Academy to learn firsthand how county government operates and supports community well-being and people explored Lake County’s history through a self-guided tour of historic sites.
We hope to see you at our final event! Learn more at lakecountyil.gov/America250.
