Samuel McClain
(Lake County, IL) On March 5, 2026, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s office approved Drug-Induced Homicide Charges against 35-year-old Samuel McClain, for allegedly selling the fentanyl that contributed to the death of 33-year-old Kayla Robinson.
On February 3rd, 2026, Zion Fire & Rescue and Zion Police both responded to the 2300 block of Elisha Ave. to check on a woman who was found unresponsive in her home. The woman was pronounced deceased at the scene and Detectives were notified as it appeared her death was a result of a drug overdose. An autopsy would later reveal the cause of death to be fentanyl and alprazolam toxicity.
Zion Detectives investigated the case with the goal of finding the source of the drugs that killed Robinson. Detectives determined McClain had interacted with Robinson hours before her death with the purpose of selling her drugs. Detectives then went about the painstaking task of gathering all of the evidence to prove that Robinson’s death was directly attributable to the drugs that McClain provided. The State’s Attorney’s office worked closely with detectives to compile the case, which ultimately involved the service of 12 search warrants and subpoenas.
McClain was later taken into custody by the Zion Police Department and was brought to First Appearance Court this morning, March 6, 2026. The State has filed a petition to detain McClain, and his detention hearing is scheduled for this afternoon, March 6, 2026, at 1:30 p.m.
Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart stated, “First, I want to thank the Zion Police Department for their outstanding work in this case. Our office joins law enforcement in doing everything possible to end these drug fatalities that impact every community. We will compassionately help those experiencing addiction, we will boldly engage in harm reduction strategies to save lives, and we will tell drug dealers that they must stop. If you cause someone's death by dealing drugs, we will find you, prosecute you, and seek to jail you — without the ability to post cash bond now that we ended cash bail."
