Update on the Pekara Lake Michigan Water Project

Earlier this year, the Lake County Department of Public Works (LCPW) shared that construction to bring Lake Michigan water to the Pekara, Inverarry and Horatio Gardens neighborhoods was completed. At that time, we also noted that the project had been submitted to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) for the required approval to move forward with the water source changeover.

The IEPA review is taking longer than anticipated; however, we want to assure customers that LCPW has been working closely with the agency throughout this process. This project is one of our top priorities, and we are eager to bring it to the finish line.

Because water changeovers must be reviewed under the IEPA’s Source Water Assessment Program, the process is detailed for good reason. The IEPA’s role is to evaluate the system carefully to ensure high water quality standards are met and that the transition to a new water source does not negatively impact the pipes serving homes.

While the review is taking longer than expected, LCPW remains committed to working directly with the IEPA and moving forward responsibly to ensure a safe and smooth transition.

Whats Next
Once IEPA approval is secured, customers will be notified of the scheduled changeover date. LCPW anticipates IEPA approval in the next few months.

The water changeover process will involve flushing the water system to remove any remaining well water and ensure a clean transition to Lake Michigan water. Customers may notice a slight change in water characteristics, such as cloudiness, as the transition occurs, which is normal and expected. We anticipate that the changeover will be relatively seamless, with minimal to no interruption in water service.

Thank you for your understanding as we work to ensure a safe, smooth and reliable transition to the new water source. More information about the project is available at lakecountyil.gov/LMWater
