"The federal administration has made the intentional decision to base ICE operations at the Naval Station Great Lakes in northern Illinois in the same month as National Hispanic Heritage Month. Masked federal agents operating without judicial warrants increases fear and weakens trust in local government. But fear will not make people safer. And trust is vital to stopping and preventing crime. 

Throughout my meetings this week, I have found brave community members and dedicated local leaders committed to helping each other. As we have said repeatedly, and most recently in June 2025, our office works to protect all Lake County residents regardless of where they were born, what they look like, or what language they speak. We need victims and witnesses to cooperate with local authorities to report crimes and to hold offenders accountable. Community trust leads to safer and healthier communities.  

This local unity that I have seen this past week is vital to our future. At the same time, we also know that moms, dads, daughters, sons, sisters, brothers, friends, and neighbors live in fear that they or their loved ones could be arrested by masked federal agents. Our fellow residents are cancelling birthday parties, skipping doctor's appointments, and missing soccer games. Our office acknowledges this fear, and we know that this is a painful time for many in our beloved and diverse community.  

Even while others are trying to divide us, we pledge to serve victims, to enforce and follow the TRUST Act, and build a safer Lake County."    

(Lake County, IL) Después de reunirnos esta última semana con miembros de la comunidad, defensores, líderes electos y autoridades locales sobre la actividad de ICE en el condado de Lake, el Fiscal del Estado de Lake County, Eric Rinehart, compartió el siguiente mensaje:

"El gobierno federal decidió iniciar operaciones de ICE en la Estación Naval Great Lakes, justo en el Mes de la Herencia Hispana. Ver agentes federales enmascarados actuando sin órdenes judiciales solo genera miedo y rompe la confianza en el gobierno local. Pero el miedo no nos hace más seguros. Y la confianza es clave para prevenir el crimen y mantener nuestras comunidades fuertes.

En estas reuniones conocí a personas valientes y líderes comprometidos que se apoyan unos a otros. Como hemos dicho antes, y más recientemente en junio de 2025, nuestra oficina trabaja para proteger a todos los residentes del Condado de Lake, sin importar dónde nacieron, cómo se ven o qué idioma hablan. Necesitamos que las víctimas y testigos se sientan con la confianza de denunciar delitos y ayudar a que los responsables enfrenten las consecuencias. La confianza entre comunidad y autoridades hace que nuestras comunidades sean más seguras y saludables.

También sabemos que muchas familias viven con miedo de que ellos o sus seres queridos puedan ser arrestados por agentes enmascarados. Hay personas cancelando fiestas de cumpleaños, dejando de ir al doctor o faltando a los partidos de sus hijos. Reconocemos ese miedo y sabemos que este es un momento difícil para muchas familias en nuestra comunidad diversa y querida.

Aunque algunos intenten dividirnos, nuestro compromiso es claro: apoyar a las víctimas, cumplir con la Ley TRUST y seguir trabajando por un Condado de Lake más seguro para todos."
