Update on the Pekara Lake Michigan Water Project
Construction is now complete on the Lake County Public Works (LCPW) project to bring Lake Michigan Water to the Pekara, Inverarry and Horatio Gardens neighborhoods in south-central Lake County. With construction wrapped up, LCPW is now finalizing the remaining steps of the project.
As part of the required process for any water source changeover, LCPW has submitted the project to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) for approval. The IEPA will conduct a thorough review to ensure the new water source meets all quality standards and will not negatively impact the lead solder joints in homes. This approval process can take a few months. Once approved, LCPW will schedule the official water changeover date.
The water changeover process will involve flushing the water system to remove any remaining well water and ensure a clean transition to Lake Michigan water. Customers may notice a slight change in water characteristics, such as taste or hardness, as the transition occurs, which is normal and expected.
We anticipate the changeover to be relatively seamless, with little to no interruption in water service. LCPW will provide advance notice once a changeover date is confirmed to help ensure a smooth transition.
