Lake County Addresses Homelessness
The results from the most recent annual assessment of unhoused individuals in Lake County are now available. This assessment, called the Lake County Point-in-Time Count, is a count of sheltered and unsheltered people experiencing homelessness on a single night every January.
The Point-in-Time Count is a vital initiative that helps communities across the country measure homelessness and guide the work in addressing it effectively. This year’s Point-in-Time Count recorded a total of 561 individuals experiencing homelessness across Lake County.
Homelessness is a complex issue. Addressing it requires the integration of multiple data systems needed to obtain an accurate picture of the overall problem and to determine the strategies for intervention. A summary of the 2025 unhoused data can be found on our website.
The County Board’s Strategic Plan priority for healthy and inclusive communities, and specifically the key strategy to increase the supply of affordable and attainable housing in the County represents one key strategy to reduce homelessness. One important step that Lake County has recently begun to expand affordable and accessible housing is partnering with the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning to convene a county-wide Coalition for Housing. This planned Coalition, comprised of multi-sector stakeholders, will begin meeting later this summer to evaluate tools and resources designed to increase affordable and attainable housing in Lake County. Innovative efforts like these will help us make positive steps toward reducing homelessness in our region.
