Lake County Clerk's Office Urges Voters to Mail Vote-by-Mail Ballots Early or Utilize Secure Drop Boxes
WAUKEGAN, Illinois –
The Lake County Clerk’s Office is encouraging all voters who are casting their ballots by mail to act early and take advantage of secure options for returning their vote-by-mail ballots. To ensure your voice is heard, please follow the United States Postal Service’s (USPS) recommendation to mail your completed ballot well before Election Day. Ballots must be postmarked by Election Day to be counted.
USPS: Extraordinary Measures to Ensure Timely Delivery According to the USPS, extraordinary measures are now underway at postal facilities nationwide to expedite the processing and transportation of ballots. “As we anticipate an uptick of ballots in the mailstream over the coming days, we are working to ensure the ballots of every individual who chooses to vote by mail are delivered quickly and securely,” said Adrienne Marshall, director of Election and Government Mail Services at USPS.
The USPS has highlighted a variety of steps being taken to secure Election Mail, including special deliveries, local handling of ballots, and daily inspections conducted by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service in coordination with federal law enforcement agencies. To maximize the likelihood of timely delivery, voters are advised to mail their ballots as soon as possible. See full press release here.
Use Lake County's Secure Drop Boxes Voters also have the option to securely return their ballots at any of Lake County’s designated drop boxes. These external drop boxes are monitored 24/7 to ensure the safety and integrity of your vote. Internal drop boxes are available at every early voting site as well. A full list of drop box locations can be found here. This provides an additional level of security and convenience for voters who prefer not to rely on mail delivery.
Voters may also track their vote-by-mail ballot from printing to acceptance with BallotTrax. Visit lakecountyil.ballottrax.net/voter for additional details.
Protecting Election Integrity USPS leaders emphasized that in addition to their standard procedures, they are deploying additional measures to accelerate the delivery of ballots during this critical period.
For voters who choose to mail their ballots on or close to Election Day, USPS officials recommend visiting a local post office and requesting a postmark to ensure compliance with the requirement for ballots to be postmarked by Election Day. This practice helps to guarantee that your vote counts.
