State’s Attorney Rinehart’s Statement on the Second Anniversary of Highland Park Shooting

On Independence Day we celebrate this Country’s immortal ideals: liberty, democracy, and service to others.

On July 4, 2022, we saw our First Responders in Highland Park and throughout Lake County rush to serve others – even in the face of gunfire.

Since that awful day, too many Lake County residents have lost their lives to gun violence, and too many First Responders have had to assist the wounded and to comfort the crying.

No brother should fear dropping their younger sibling off at school, no aunt should fear taking their niece to a neighborhood BBQ, and no daughter should fear standing with her mother at a July 4th parade.

We must pledge to all Americans who remain EXPOSED TO the dangers of gun violence that we will not stop and that this uniquely American problem will someday end.

In addition to enacting a federal assault ban, as we have done in Illinois, we must continue to invest in all communities to address the root causes of gun violence, expand the use of red flag laws to stop domestic abusers and others from accessing weapons, and hold accountable in the courtrooms those who would take the lives and happiness of our friends, families, and neighbors.

All branches of government and all segments of society must come together to ensure that every American has the right to life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, AND lives free of the fear of gun violence.
