Keep your money safe from scammers by spotting and avoiding gift card scams. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind you that the government will never call and order you to pay money in the form of gift cards. If you receive an unsolicited call from anyone requesting money, you should be suspicious. If a person claims to be from a government agency, call that government agency first to determine the validity of the call, before discussing anything. If you have been the victim of a scam, contact your local law-enforcement. Read the full release.

Flooding has more negative impacts than most realize. Not only does flooding damage property, it can also carry contaminates and pollute our water. Floodwater picks up fertilizer, oil, pesticides, snowmelt salt and other pollutants as it makes its way through streets, drains and ditches. This untreated water can end up in our streams, rivers, lakes and the ocean.
Help do your part to ensure the longevity and health of Lake County's watersheds in the event of flooding by following these Stormwater Best Management Practices.
Pick Up Dog Waste: Properly dispose of dog waste by using a bag and placing it in the trash to avoid contaminants getting into the water.
Ditch Bad Fertilizers: Use phosphorus free fertilizers to limit this pollutant harming water quality, fish, and aquatic plants.
Install a Rain Garden: A depressed, landscaped garden planted with native species helps to slow and filter stormwater runoff into the ground rather than running off into storm drains, and eventually into streams and lakes. Learn more

March is Severe Weather Preparedness Month
Now is the time to prepare. Don't wait until severe storms are forecast -- It may be too late! This guide from the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) and the National Weather Service provides information about tornadoes, severe storms, lightning and flooding along with recommended actions to take before, during and after each of these weather events.
Severe weather preparedness includes gathering information and supplies to prepare. IEMA's Family Communications Plan helps people map locations to meet and track important contact information. Another good resource for planning can be downloaded for free at ready.illinois.gov.

Established by the National Women’s History Alliance, the 2024 theme for Women's History Month is "Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion." Since 1987, this annual event in March is dedicated to the celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society. This year's theme recognizes women throughout the country who understand that, for a positive future, we need to eliminate bias and discrimination entirely from our lives and institutions. We are proud to celebrate women who work for basic inclusion, equality, and fairness.

March 1 marks Lake County’s 185th birthday! To celebrate, we’re asking for staff photo submissions from their time at Lake County—the older the photo the better! We’re going to feature a staff photo collage on our social media at the end of March. Submit your photos to be included.
Question: I'd like to see employees recognized outside of retirements or pictures of the "higher ups" achievements. Can we recognize the normal day to day people that keep the county running daily?
Response: All employees are encouraged to send stories and info to Communications about staff news. And if your department hosts a party or event, you can share the photos through email or use the form to have it in the County Connection.
Do you have a question or suggestion? Others may want to know too! Please use the Anonymous Suggestions and Questions Form, and your submission may be answered in a future County Connection.
