February is Black History Month

Black History Month

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their role in U.S. History. Carter G. Woodson, born to former slaves, educated himself as a youth. He went on to earn a BA degree from the University of Chicago and then his PhD from Harvard University with a goal to provide a historical account of African ancestry. In 1915, in response to the lack of information on the accomplishments of Black people available to the public, historian Carter G. Woodson co-founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. In 1926, he launched the celebration of "Negro History Week" which was the precursor to Black History Month in the United States.

Today Black History Month continues the discussion of Black people and their contributions through activities such as museum exhibits and film screenings, and by encouraging the study of achievements by African Americans year-round.
