Update on the Buffalo Grove Road Improvements Project
The Lake County Division of Transportation (LCDOT) is currently conducting a Phase 1 study for improvements on Buffalo Grove Road from IL 22 to US 45. On May 24, 2023, LCDOT held a public information meeting showing proposed improvements which included:
- Constructing two travel lanes in each direction with a center median
- Filling non-motorized travel gaps to improve connectivity in the bike path and sidewalk systems
- Safety enhancements at the CN Railroad crossing to include a new barrier median and rail crossing signals and gates for both vehicles and pedestrians

Since the meeting, we have received a great deal of input, feedback, questions and concerns from the community.
The project team, comprised of LCDOT and consultant engineers and planners, are currently investing a significant amount of time and resources to analyze the input received. We take the public feedback seriously and want to consider possible ways to incorporate as many of the good ideas as possible. It is imperative that we do our due diligence, which takes time, to address community concerns as part of this process.
Here are a few items brought up by the community that are currently under review:

Collecting new traffic data - Performing additional traffic counts and updating traffic models to confirm today’s (post-pandemic) traffic volumes are consistent with previous data collected.

Analyzing crash data for the most recent five years. The recent data will be compared to the previous analysis to see if there have been any changes to the crash patterns in this corridor.

Looking into further alternatives that address community concerns such as pedestrian crossing locations and turning movements from side streets.
Once the analysis of the public input received and the new traffic and safety data is completed, we will share this updated information with the public.
