Estiven Sarminento, 16, is being charged as an adult with two counts of First-Degree Murder. Sarminento was arrested on Monday, August 14, after the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force and Highland Park Police Department were able to identify Sarminento as the shooter following a thorough investigation.  

“We are grateful to the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force and Highland Park Police for their effective work. Outstanding investigators and innovative technology are important to solving violent crime. We are working with the family and express our ongoing support and condolences. This offender will be held responsible for this brutal execution.” Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart stated after the bond hearing.  

On Sunday, August 13, 2023, Highland Park Police Department responded to the 2300 block of Green Bay Road to a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers located the victim, later identified as Omar Diaz, and transported him to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced deceased.  

Investigators were able to retrieve surveillance videos, conduct interviews, and collect additional evidence that assisted them in identifying Sarminento. Preliminary investigation shows the victim walking down the sidewalk when he was approached by Sarminento. The two engaged in a brief conversation before Sarminento pulled out a firearm and shot Diaz.  

Because Saminento is a juvenile, he is being held at the Hulse Detention Center in Vernon Hills. Saminento’s next court date is on August 23, 2023, for status of attorney.
