$10 Million Bond for Man Who Shot at ATF Agents In “Violent Attack”
Alvaro Grijalva
(Lake County, IL) On Wednesday, June 28, 2023, a Lake County Judge set a $10 million bond on a Waukegan man being charged with shooting at ATF agents as they served a search warrant.
Alvaro Grijalva, 29, was charged with five counts of Attempted Murder (one count for each officer nearest the door), five counts of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, both class X felonies, and one count of Unlawful Use of Weapon by a Felon, a class 2 felony.
After bond was set, Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart said, “Our law enforcement partners protect the community every day. And every day we pray that each return home safely. We filed the highest charges possible because this offender needs to be isolated from the community for as long as possible in light of this violent attack.”
Grijalva was the subject of a long-term investigation conducted by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office’s Special Investigations Unit (SIG) in conjunction the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) Chicago Field Division.
On June 27, 2023, members of the SIG and the ATF went to Grijalva’s residence to execute a search warrant. When officers approached Grijalva’s home, Grijalva shot at law enforcement twice, nearly striking them. No law enforcement officer was struck or injured.
Members of the ATF Special Response Team (SRT) were able to take Grijalva into custody after he exited the house.
Grijalva is currently being held at the Lake County Jail, and his next court date will be on July 25, 2023.
