(Lake County, IL) On Friday, June 2, 2023, a Lake County Judge set a $5 million bond for each juvenile charged in the fatal shooting of a Waukegan Volleyball Coach that took place on May 6, 2023.  

David Dejesus, 16, and Yahir A. Torrecilla, 17, were both arrested on Thursday, June 1, after Waukegan Police Officers executed search warrants at each defendant’s home. While conducting the search warrants, officers were able to retrieve firearms from both homes.   

“Our office is proud of the Waukegan Police Department, who has been working tirelessly on investigating this incident, and of our First Assistant Lauren Callinan, and Chief Deputy of the Criminal Division, Jeff Facklam who worked closely with the Waukegan detectives. Our office will support the victim’s family and seek justice in the court room,” Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart said.  

On Saturday, May 6, 2023, at approximately 10:36 p.m., Waukegan Police Department responded to a report of shots fired in the area of 10th Steet and Lewis Avenue. Upon arrival, officers located the victim, later identified as Niolis M. Collazo, unresponsive in her vehicle. She was transported to a nearby hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries. 

Investigators retrieved numerous surveillance videos that assisted them in identifying the offending vehicle, later determined to be registered to a relative of Dejesus.  

On May 11, 2023, Dejesus was pulled over while driving the offending vehicle. Officers seized the vehicle. Officers conducted an extensive investigation that revealed that Dejesus and Torrecilla were occupants in the offending vehicle at the time of the shooting.  

Because both defendants are juveniles, they are being held at the Hulse Detention Center in Vernon Hills. Dejesus’ next court date is on June 8, at 9:00 a.m. and Torrecilla’s next court date is on June 9, at 9:00 a.m.
