Dear Neighbors,

As I write this to you, spring has sprung and in the Chain O' Lakes, the summer activities will start in earnest this holiday weekend. Please be safe and considerate of others.

As we salute our fallen in the military, please take a moment to reach out to a veteran and say “Thanks for your service." It will go a long way.

I also want to thank the past trustees for serving on the Lakes Region Sanitary District. The trustees, myself included, provided countless hours of leadership and guidance and had the perseverance and guts to close the sanitary district.

Over the years, this agency had provided duplicate services that the county could provide residents within the district. The action to dissolve the district and remove the district from the tax levy will save thousands of taxpayers’ dollars.

Lakes Region Sanitary District Closes, Providing Taxpayer Savings

Lakes Region Sanitary District

In 2019, Lake County announced the consolidation that allowed Lake County Public Works (LCPW) to assume the operations and maintenance of the District while transferring more than 6,000 customers, 20 lift stations, 82 miles of sewer pipe, and 2,060 manholes to LCPW. Then in September 2022, the Lake County Board approved a resolution that officially closed the Lakes Region Sanitary District. Since then, work has been completed to dissolve the district and remove it from the tax levy.

The Lakes Region Sanitary District Tax Levy has been eliminated which will collectively save taxpayers that own property within the District boundaries approximately $1.25 million annually. Before consolidation, the District served portions of Fox Lake, Lake Villa, Volo, Round Lake, Round Lake Beach and unincorporated areas near those communities since the 1970s.

Lake County Holds Strategic Plan Community Visioning Sessions

strategic plan community session

On May 17 and 18, Lake County Government held two community visioning sessions, one virtual and the other in person, to gain input for the County’s Strategic Plan. The updated strategic plan will provide a roadmap for achieving the County’s goals and objectives over the next four years. It ensures that resources are allocated efficiently and effectively, and that progress towards the goals are monitored and measured.

If you missed the virtual community visioning session, you can watch the full program here. Watch the community visioning session in Spanish here.

In addition to the virtual and in-person community visioning sessions, a survey and ideas wall were provided to the public as an opportunity to provide input toward the strategic plan. Working with a consultant, the County will develop recommendations to present to the County Board, who will approve the strategic plan later this year.

County’s Single-Use Plastics Policy Receives National Recognition

single-use plastics policy

Lake County has been selected to receive an Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties (NACo), recognizing its policy to prohibit single-use plastics within government operations.  The NACo Achievement Awards honor innovative, effective county government programs that strengthen services for residents.

Approximately one million single-use plastics will be eliminated from Lake County government operations this year as part of the new policy, which went into effect in January 2023. The policy ceases single-use plastics from being purchased, sold, or distributed within county government operations, including the cafeteria, coffee kiosk, and vending machines.

The new policy applies only to what Lake County government can purchase and sell and does not apply to Lake County businesses and residents. Plastics can still be brought to Lake County government facilities by the public and employees.
