The 2023 ICAW theme is For Healthier Soil … Healthier Food, Compost!

April 13, 2023

The Illinois Food Scrap & Composting Coalition (IFSCC), a non-profit corporation that advances diversion and composting of all organics in the state, is excited to announce its International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) 2023 programming. ICAW is the largest and most comprehensive education initiative of the global compost community. The 2023 ICAW theme is For Healthier Soil … Healthier Food, Compost! and the dates are Sunday, May 7 - Saturday, May 13.

Since 2021, the IFSCC has planned robust ICAW programming that combines in-person and hands-on experiences with virtual discussions and presentations to reach diverse and widespread audiences at all stages of life and composting experience. The 2023 line-up includes a day of “Adventures in Composting” with farmers, gardeners, and backyard composters around the state; a virtual International Cafe at which composting stories from around the world will be shared; a virtual Legislative Lunch & Learn; and  multiple opportunities throughout the week to attend library programs and obtain finished compost.

Co-facilitator Kate Caldwell has a Masters Degree in Environmental Biology and has been composting since the 1990s. As an Interpretative Naturalist with the Will County Forest Preserve for more than 20 years, she did lots of zero waste presentations focused on ecological footprint, plastic, and composting. Now retired, Kate is active in IFSCC and says, “Watch out world, I’m crazy.”

Co-facilitator Merleanne Rampale is a long-time champion of the many benefits of composting and compost use. She started gardening and composting with her father as a young girl, gives presentations and workshops on food waste reduction, diversion, recycling, and composting, and works with schools, municipalities, and other organizations in her role at a Chicagoland Solid Waste Management agency.

The IFSCC leadership team, present and past, is proud of its growth and accomplishments and enthusiastically plans to expand membership, increase participation, and continue its critical work. The IFSCC encourages all to step up, ask questions, share their expertise, and help contribute to the success of IFSCC, ICAW programming, and organics diversion and composting in Illinois.
