Public Defender’s Office Celebrates 60th Anniversary

Public Defender's Office

Earlier this month, Lake County recognized National Public Defender’s Day and the 60th anniversary of the Gideon v. Wainwright ruling that made the Public Defender's Office profession possible. In this landmark Supreme Court decision, justices unanimously ruled that defendants facing substantial jail time deserved legal representation in state courts, even if they could not afford to pay for counsel.

The first Public Defender in Lake County was appointed in 1972, which marked the creation of the Public Defender’s Office. Public Defender Joy Gossman is the first woman to be appointed to the role, and she has served the longest. The office now consists of 52 employees consisting of support staff, social workers, investigators, and attorneys, all who work together to serve the indigent accused in Lake County.

$11 Million Secured for Ecosystem Restoration

restoration

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Chicago District received funding to restore native habitats and improve ecosystem services in the Upper Des Plaines River Watershed. The Lake County Forest Preserves is a partner in this project, which will take place at Raven Glen Forest Preserve in Antioch.

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin announced that $11 million in earmark funding will address ecosystem restoration and mitigate flooding along 67 miles of the river in Lake and Cook counties.

This funding will allow the Corps, in coordination with the Lake County Forest Preserves, to restore Pollack Lake, also known as Timber Lake, and Hastings Creek wetlands. The 421-acre site was modified to support decades of agricultural use. This project will restore the site's natural hydrology, which will have local and down-stream benefits. Learn more »

Missing Hawk Found Safe

missing hawk

After missing for five days, a red-tailed hawk, used for education programming, was found near its home at Ryerson Conservation Area in Riverwoods on Tuesday, March 14. He escaped from his home when it was vandalized.

“The entire education staff is thrilled that our education hawk has been recovered safely, knowing how challenging it must have been for him since he is severely limited with flight,” said Director of Education Nan Buckardt. “The hawk, as an education ambassador, provides the opportunity for program participants to learn about ecosystems, biodiversity, food webs and more while admiring an animal that could not survive without our help.” Find details »
