Lake County Announces $88 Million in Projects for 2023 Construction Program
The Lake County Division of Transportation (LCDOT) today announced the 2023 construction program that includes $88 million for infrastructure projects to reduce traffic congestion, increase safety, and reduce carbon emissions on Lake County's transportation system.
More than 20 transportation projects will be under construction in 2023, featuring intersection improvements, bridge and culvert replacements, bike path connections, resurfacings, and a new roundabout.
"The Lake County Board is investing more than $750 million over the next six years to maintain and modernize our roads, bridges, and bike paths," said Lake County Board Chair Sandy Hart. "Through this commitment we are able to address critical transportation needs such as road widenings, safer turn lanes, and other necessary improvements that will reduce congestion, reduce carbon emissions and improve safety for all roadway users across Lake County.”

Aptakisic Road Reconstruction Reconstruction and widening of Aptakisic Road to a 5-lane roadway cross section between IL 83 and Buffalo Grove Road. A new multi-use path will be constructed on the north side Aptakisic Road, and a new sidewalk will be constructed on the south side.
Darrell Road Corridor Improvements with Roundabout First phase of a multi-year construction project to improve Darrell Road from Case Road to Fisher Road. In 2023, a new roundabout will be constructed at the realigned intersection of Darrell Road at Neville and Case Road.
Kilbourne at Wadsworth Road Intersection Improvement Adding turn lanes on southbound Kilbourne Road and a left-turn lane on eastbound Wadsworth Road. Resurfacing Kilbourne Road from Wadsworth Road to IL 173, and completing a sidewalk gap on the south side of Wadsworth Road.
Stearns School Road Bridge Construction of a new single-span bridge over Mill Creek to replace the existing culvert. Single-span bridges have longer lifespans than culverts and improved drainage while requiring less maintenance.
![Non-Motorized Improvements](https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/ILLAKE/2023/03/7386766/farm-to-table-7_original.gif) Several non-motorized transportation (NMT) improvements are scheduled for this year's construction program. Many of these improvements are built into larger projects. For example, a new multi-use path and sidewalk will be constructed as part of the Aptakisic Road project, and a new bike path will be added on Darrell Road. Whenever possible, four-foot-wide bike-friendly paved shoulders are added during resurfacing projects.
"We actively work with communities on filling bike path and sidewalk gaps to continue connecting our ever growing non-motorized transportation system in Lake County," said Jennifer Clark, Lake County Board Public Works and Transportation Committee Chair and Board Member for District 15. "These projects connect to jobs, parks, schools, forest preserves, grocery stores, Metra and bus stations and other key destinations so residents have the option of traveling without the need for their own motor vehicle."
![Resurfacing Lineup](https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/ILLAKE/2023/03/7383590/farm-to-table-4_original.gif) Resurfacing a roadway typically takes about three months to complete and can require temporary lane closures and flaggers to direct traffic. Preservation work planned in 2023 includes the following pavement resurfacing projects:
- Fairfield Road - Old McHenry Road to Ivanhoe Road
- Hunt Club Road - IL 173 to State Line Road
- Kilbourne Road - Wadsworth Road to Il 173
- Winchester Road - East of IL 83 to IL 21
"In addition to the resurfacing projects this year, crews will be working on several culvert replacements and bridge repairs," said Shane Schneider, LCDOT Director and County Engineer. "Over the past few years, LCDOT has replaced about 80% of the existing aging corrugated metal pipe culverts in our system with new concrete culverts or bridges that have a longer lifespan and allow our lakes, rivers, and streams to flow more freely under Lake County highways.
