Lake County Circuit Judge Daniel B. Shanes is the 2022 recipient of the Honorable Seymour Simon Justice Lifetime Achievement Award.
“I am proud that my friend and colleague Judge Shanes is being honored with this prestigious award,” said Chief Judge Mark Levitt of the 19th Judicial Circuit.
A judge for more than 15 years, Shanes currently serves as the Deputy Chief Judge of Lake County, hearing some of the most serious felony and most complex civil cases in the courthouse.
During his time on the bench, Judge Shanes has been called upon by the Illinois Supreme Court to serve as Chair of the Illinois Judicial College Board of Trustees, Vice Chair of the Committee on Pattern Jury Instructions for Criminal Cases, a member of the Illinois Judicial Conference, and as a certified new judge mentor, among various appointments. He regularly serves as faculty for judicial education for judges and lawyers in Illinois. In addition, as a member of the faculty of the National Judicial College, Judge Shanes provides judicial education to judges across the United States.
“I am deeply honored to be recognized by the Illinois Jewish Judges Association, and grateful to the many judges who, day in and day out, work tirelessly to deliver justice across our community,” Shanes said.
Prior to becoming a judge, Judge Shanes served as an assistant State’s Attorney and division chief in Lake County for nearly 12 years, becoming one of the lead prosecutors in child sexual predator and first-degree murder cases.
Judge Shanes has published dozens of articles, several of which have been cited by the Illinois Supreme Court, Illinois Appellate Court, and legal treatises. He has served on the Board of Directors of both the Illinois Judges Association and Lake County Bar Association, as well as a local homeless shelter and transitional living facility for women and children.
Judge Shanes will be presented with his award on Thursday, December 8, 2022, at the 18th Annual Justice, Lifetime Achievement, and Public Service Awards and Installation Dinner.
