Libertyville Groundbreaking Event Today Kickoff to Construction
Today the Lake County Stormwater Management Commission (SMC) and Libertyville Township celebrated as construction begins on the Oak Spring Lane Storm Sewer Project. The project will help alleviate flood issues in unincorporated Libertyville Township, west of St. Mary's Road to the Des Plaines River.
A storm sewer bypass will be added along Oak Spring Lane to relieve a consistent source of flooding to homes between Countryside Manor, Timber Lane Estates, Terre Fair, and Oak Spring subdivisions, which were built prior to modern stormwater regulations. The total project cost, estimated at $1.45 million is fully funded by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity Grant (DCEO). Construction is expected to be completed this December.
"Chronic street flooding and occasional structural flooding is all too common in this area during heavy rain because existing storm sewers just can't keep up," said District 21 Lake County Board Member Ann Maine. "I am thrilled that The Stormwater Management Commission and our invaluable partners have prioritized planning and worked tirelessly to secure funding to help residents and businesses here in Libertyville and throughout Lake County who have experienced the devastating effects of flooding."
"The Lake County Planning, Building and Development and Public Works Departments, Libertyville Township Highway Department, and SMC have been in the trenches together along with Lake County Board Member Ann Maine in the past when these neighborhoods have flooded," shared Kurt Woolford, Executive Director of the Stormwater Management Commission. "I am grateful to be gathered with you all here today, now with the necessary resources to begin working towards a long term solution."
Additional funding for this project also included a project expense match of $129,035, provided by Libertyville Township. Lake County was granted $122 million in funding by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. This supports local initiatives in managing regional stormwater and related infrastructure maintenance as well as improvement projects to reduce flooding for hard hit communities across Lake County. Future project locations include: Antioch, Grayslake, Highland Park, Park City, Shields Township, Warren Township, and Waukegan.
