ILLINOIS EPA ANNOUNCES DIFFICULTIES WITH HOUSEHOLD CHEMICAL WASTE (HCW) COLLECTIONS

Due to the Illinois IEPA’s temporary suspension of collections, SWALCO must limit their HCW collection events.

Per the IEPA’s News Release issued on August 22, the:

“Illinois EPA currently has a contract for the disposal of collected HHW, which disposes much of the collected waste at an incinerator located in Ohio. The Ohio facility had a fire in July, which required them to cease operations until specifically made parts can be shipped from Germany. It is estimated that the facility will not be operational until mid-November.”

SWALCO will plan to hold one event per month. Due to the shutdown SWALCO is limited to accept only the following materials:

  • Oil
  • Antifreeze
  • Flammables:
    • Oil-based Paints
    • Gasoline
    • Solvents
    • Flammable Aerosols only

The IEPA suggests that residents in possession of household hazardous chemicals should “… Keep the materials safely stored in their original manufacturer containers, as those are designed to safely hold the items, until {all} HCW collections resume”.

SWALCO asks that residents who schedule one of the limited appointments, please adhere to this limited list of accepted items until we can resume our full program. We will post updates and notices on our website at swalco.org as we receive notifications from the IEPA regarding their resolution of this issue.
