Dear Neighbor,
Yesterday I learned that the Shields Township Supervisor, the Shields Township Assessor and the staff of the Shields Township Assessor's Office have resigned, effective immediately.
I have received questions regarding whether Lake County Government and the Chief County Assessment Office (CCAO) can take on the roles and responsibilities of Shields Township. While the CCAO works closely with all of the township assessors offices, the Illinois Property Tax Code does not allow for the CCAO to take on their responsibilities at this time.
Here are some key pieces of information for you in light of these vacancies:
Residents of Shields Township can file for exemptions (homestead, senior, veteran) online using Lake County's Smartfile E-Filing System by clicking here.
Senior Freeze applications must be filed no later than July 30th for tax year 2022. This is a yearly requirement.
The Chief County Assessment Office is always ready to assist the residents of Lake County. They are available 8:30am - 5PM Monday through Friday. Walk-ins are welcome, or residents can call 847-377-2050.
Questions pertaining to the Shields Township government should be directed to the Shields Township Board of Trustees (email addresses here).
Residents in need of General Assistance (for example, utility and rent assistance) may still contact the Shields Township Case Manager, Sarah Shepherd-Scantlin, at 847-234-0802.
Thank you,
Sandy Hart Lake County Board District 13 Sandy Hart Webpage
