Dear Neighbors,
|
As many of you know, in addition to my work on the Lake County Board, I also teach Economics at Carthage College in Kenosha, WI. The past few years have been a challenging time in education, and I want to thank all our teachers and students for their hard work and dedication in ensuring a strong learning environment for all. Enjoy your well-deserved summer break!
Speaking of summer, this week we can celebrate the return of our local Farmer’s markets. Farmer’s markets provide access to fresh, locally grown, nutritious food and help support our local economy.
The Libertyville Farmer’s Market kicks off its 42nd season on Thursday, June 2. Markets will be held every Thursday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Cook Park in downtown Libertyville.
The Mundelein Farmer’s Market begins on Friday, June 17 from 3 to 7 p.m. on Park Street between Lake and Seymour Street. It offers a wonderful selection of fresh produce, flowers, meats, cheeses and artisanal foods. Our family loves the fresh bread, fruit and pies at each of the markets and I always try and find something new each time I visit. They even have dog treats for Pip!
Finally, the Mundelein Tool Library (428 N. Chicago Avenue, Mundelein) is celebrating its one year anniversary with an Open House on Saturday, June 4 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
If you haven’t gotten to visit the Tool Library yet, this is a terrific opportunity to see all the tools and items they have available for check out. The Tool Library is a wonderful resource for our community. Instead of having to buy a tool for a special project, you can check one out from the tool lending library. They also accept donations of gently used tools. The Tool Library is open to residents of Mundelein, Libertyville, Vernon Hills and Green Oaks.
Hope to see you around town!

Protocols in Place to Protect Turtles
Ecologists from the Lake County Forest Preserves are working with expert veterinarians to monitor Blanding's turtles in this area and develop protocols in an attempt to keep them safe from a fungus recently detected within the population in Lake County that may lead to turtle shell disease.
Over the past 13 years, Gary Glowacki, manager of conservation ecology at the Lake County Forest Preserves, and his team have grown and stabilized the largest Blanding’s turtle population in the state. Through routine health assessments done as part of the turtle recovery program, it has been discovered that three Blanding’s turtles that are part of this program have contracted Emydomyces testavorans, a fungus that is known to be highly associated with turtle shell disease. Lake County EMA Distributes Five Million PPE Items & Supplies to Community
The Lake County Emergency Management Agency, in collaboration with the Lake County Health Department, reached a major milestone in May, distributing five million Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) items and supplies out to the community since the start of the pandemic response.
PPE items included gowns, face shields, masks of various types for both children and adults gloves, disinfecting wipes, hand sanitizer, thermometers, and rapid tests. Over 400 entities have received PPE and supplies to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
Volunteers and staff have been an integral part of distributing PPE year round to facilities most in need all across the County. This milestone would not have been possible without the dedication of the volunteers who distributed items, sometimes in extreme heat and cold, to get items to communities in need.
