County Board Confirms Steve Snarski to Fill District 8 Board Vacancy
At the April 22 Special Call County Board meeting, the Lake County Board confirmed Chair Sandy Hart's appointment of Waukegan resident Steve Snarski to fill the District 8 County Board seat left vacant by the resignation of former board member Bill Durkin on April 18. Snarski was sworn into office and began his duties immediately.
Snarski is a third generation resident of Waukegan and life-long resident of Lake County. He currently works as a licensed realtor and previously served as an intern for the Lake County Emergency Management Agency while completing his undergraduate degree at Western Illinois University.
Illinois law requires the county board chair, with the advice and consent of the county board, to appoint a qualified individual to fill a vacancy on the county board within 60 days. Per state law, the appointee must be of the same political party as the seat's predecessor. Accordingly, the chair was required to appoint a Democrat.
Following Durkin’s resignation, in conformance with County Board Rules, Hart established an advisory committee to review applicants and provide a recommendation to the Board. The committee was comprised of Lake County Board Vice Chair Mary Ross-Cunningham, Lake County Board Members Bill Durkin and Gina Roberts, and Lake County Democratic Party Chair Lauren Beth Gash, which reviewed several applications and recommended Snarski for the appointment.
"During the interview process, Steve Snarski demonstrated a strong desire and commitment to focus his time and energy in the service to his community," Hart said. "I am confident that he will be an excellent addition to the Lake County Board, bringing his enthusiasm and caring attitude to the position."
Snarski will serve until the end of the current Board term, Dec 4, 2022.
"I am honored to continue Bill Durkin’s legacy of strong county leadership for all residents of District 8. Bringing my passion, education and understanding of county government to the position will allow me to make a difference in the community where I grew up,” said Snarski.
