Lake County Public Works Spring Newsletter
Spring Hydrant Flushing is Underway
Lake County Public Works is currently conducting its semi-annual water hydrant flushing program. The process will be performed daily, Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., per the hydrant flushing schedule and will continue until all water mains throughout our water systems have been flushed.
During and immediately after flushing, you may notice a slight discoloration of your water due to the disturbance in the water main. This is not harmful and will dissipate after a short time. Please avoid doing laundry during periods of flushing in your area to prevent staining of clothing. After flushing, we recommend running cold water for several minutes to clear your pipes.
Signs will be posted in each area before the start of hydrant flushing.

Did you know products that are labeled "flushable" can lead to clogs and costly repairs to our sewer infrastructure?
Just because a product is marked 'flushable', does not mean that it can be flushed because they do not degrade like toilet paper and can end up clogging pipes. Only toilet paper and human waste should be flushed - all other products should be properly disposed.
When flushed, products like disinfecting wipes, 'flushable' wipes, and paper towels can cause damage to pumps and clog sewer pipes. This can all lead to costly repairs and can negatively impact the sewer systems around your home and neighborhood. Pipes in your building and on your property can be affected, resulting in surprise repairs and costs to homeowners and business owners.
Please protect our sewer system. DON'T flush wipes!

Sanitary Sewer Rehabilitation (Lining) in the Sylvan Lake Area
A contractor for Lake County Public Works is currently lining the sanitary sewer pipes on the north, east and west sides of Sylvan Lake in Mundelein. Sewer lining is a “trenchless” technology that does not require digging and revitalizes aging pipes so they can utilized for an additional 50+ years. Residents near Sylvan Lake will observe increased truck traffic, periodic lane closures, and noise from equipment during daytime hours. View the project area and learn more. |

Congrats to Dan Colwell on his Retirement!
Dan Colwell, Water/Wastewater Operator announced his retirement in April after nearly 35 years of service at Lake County Public Works. Dan has been an integral member of the team both in the lab and at the Des Plaines River (DPR) wastewater treatment plant.
Dan helped to bring the enhanced biological nutrient removal system to the DPR wastewater reclamation facility. This upgraded system reduces the amount of phosphorus discharged into local waterways.
In 2001 and 2020, the Lake County Des Plaines River Water Reclamation Facility, located in Buffalo Grove, won the plant of the year award. Dan was a part of the team that was recognized with this prestigious award that goes to wastewater treatment facilities in Illinois that exemplify the best safety practices, preventative maintenance to ensure continued operations, and the use of modern technology to serve the community.
Dan's professionalism, teamwork, and initiative will be missed. We thank Dan for 35 years of outstanding service to the community, and wish him the very best in retirement!
