About the Program
We break our projects down into three categories: preservation, modernization, and expansion. Preservation projects, which are our top priority, keep water and sewer pipes, water treatment plants, and many other assets in good condition. Modernization projects improve the existing system and bring our assets in line with current technologies and industry practices and standards. Expansion projects create additional capacity in the water and sewer system to keep up with growth and demand.
Notable projects programmed to begin this year include:
-
White Deer Run Reservoir
The Vernon Hills Water System serves approximately 25,000 residents in the Village of Vernon Hills and surrounding areas and requires additional storage capacity to protect users in the event of increased water demand or emergency circumstances. A new two million-gallon water reservoir is planned to begin construction in 2022 as a part of the capital program.
-
Linden Sewer Replacement
The rehabilitation and replacement of nearly 3,000 linear feet of sanitary sewer carrying wastewater from areas near the Village of Third Lake is included as a part of the capital program for 2022. The original pipe shows signs of impending failure, and immediate repairs and replacement is required. The modern pipe material should last 50+ years.
-
Water Reclamation Facility Bar Screen Equipment Replacement
The existing bar screen equipment at our New Century Town and Des Plaines River Water Reclamation Facilities has reached the end of their useful life. Bar screens capture and remove materials from wastewater flowing into the water reclamation facility, allowing the wastewater to continue on in the treatment process. Replacements of these screens in 2022 is included as a part of the capital program.
"The Capital Improvement Program is essential to preserving, modernizing, and expanding our water and sewer systems throughout Lake County," said Austin McFarlane, Interim Lake County Public Works Director. "We have a great team dedicated to implementing these much-needed infrastructure projects that will replace 70-year-old water and sewer pipes, use new technology that will allow us to monitor the system more efficiently, and build resilience in preparation for emergency events."
