North Chicago Mother's Bail set at $5 Million in Death of 6-year-old Son
(Lake County, IL) - Bond was set at $5 million Wednesday for the mother of a 6-year-old North Chicago child who died after being placed in a cold shower as punishment for misbehavior.
Jannie Perry, who was charged Saturday with first-degree murder in the death of Damari Perry, appeared in bond court Wednesday afternoon after spending time in a local hospital, where she was taken by police after complaining of illness. Perry has remained in custody of local police since charges were initiated.
A $5 million arrest warrant had been issued for Perry while she was in the hospital, and Assistant State’s Attorney Lindsay Hicks asked that Perry’s bail remain at that amount. Lake County Judge Raymond Collins granted that request.
“Our victim advocates, prosecutors, and detectives continue to support the family in this case while awaiting the official autopsy results from Lake County, Indiana. We believe that the court made the right decision with respect to this defendant’s bond and custody status,” State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart said after the bond hearing.
When asked by the judge if she planned to hire a private attorney, Perry replied “eventually,” but that for now she needed representation by the Lake County Public Defender’s Office.
Collins set a preliminary hearing date of Feb. 8 at 1:30 p.m. for Perry. In addition to murder, Perry also faces charges of concealing a homicidal death and obstructing justice.
One of her sons, Jeremiah Perry, 20, was charged with aggravated battery causing great harm to a child under 12, concealing a homicidal death, and obstructing justice. His bond was set at $3 million Sunday.
