Lake County Rising Student Essay/Poster Contest Entrants Sought

(Lake County, IL) - Lake County Rising is seeking poem and essay contest entries from Lake County high school students, and is holding a poster contest for those in middle school, as part of an effort to raise awareness of violence against women.

The program is sponsored by the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office and several partner agencies. This year’s contest theme is “We Rise to Respect, Grace, and Kindness.”

Lake County Rising works to bring members of the community together to focus on the abuse experienced by women, and to commit to doing our part to end this violence. This collective gathering is a demonstration of rising in solidarity with women who have experienced abuse, according to Sandra Bankston, a therapist with the State’s Attorney’s Office.

The local effort is modeled after One Billion Rising, a global movement in which individuals come together to demand an end to violence against women. One Billion Rising was founded in 2012 by playwright and author Eve Ensler.

High school students are invited to participate in a poem/essay contest in which they take on what it means to rise on behalf of others in today’s society, and how the words respect, grace, and kindness play a role.
