Suspect in Gurnee Area Fake Drug Deal Murder Case Arrested Thursday in Waukegan
(Lake County, IL) - The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office assisted the Sheriff’s Office in apprehending a defendant Thursday who was wanted for his alleged role in a Gurnee-area murder last year.
An assistant state’s attorney discovered information Thursday morning about the possible location of the defendant in Waukegan, and alerted the Sheriff’s Office. After locating him, officers took Dalance Robinson, 21, into custody without incident based on a warrant for his arrest on murder charges. The warrant was signed July 14.
“Due to the quick thinking of our office’s excellent ASAs, we were able to tip off the Sheriff’s Office to the likely location of Dalance Robinson. Sheriff’s deputies engaged in a stakeout of the location and apprehended Robinson without incident,” State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart said Thursday afternoon.
Robinson was one of three men who allegedly offered to sell marijuana to the victim on the evening of May 9, 2020.
When the men arrived at a residence in Grandwood Park, the victim, Elliot Jones, gave the men money for marijuana, but the men began driving away without giving him anything. Robinson then allegedly shot Jones when he tried to cling to the departing vehicle.
The other two defendants, Jordae Wilson and Donterrance Nixon, both of Waukegan, have been in custody, with Wilson facing first-degree murder charges.
Nixon had been changed with murder, but agreed to plead guilty to armed robbery, a Class X felony, in exchange for the state dropping the murder charges against him. He also must testify truthfully if needed in the cases against the other two defendants.
“This type of quick thinking and proactive engagement with our law enforcement partners to apprehend violent criminals is exactly the type of coordination I expect out of our ASAs,” Rinehart said. “Our focus should always be on keeping the residents of Lake County safe from violent crime and today’s events epitomize that work.”
