Chicago man, Facing Felony Charges in Round Lake Park Home Invasion Attack, Pleads Not Guilty to  Charges in Three Separate Cases

(Lake County, IL) - A Chicago man facing a Class X felony charge for an alleged Round Lake Park home invasion and attack, as well as violating child sex offender regulations, pleaded not guilty to criminal counts from three cases Wednesday in Lake County Circuit Court.

Kevin J. Calhoun, 31, is being held in Lake County Jail with an “umbrella” bail set at $500,000 and covering all three of the cases against him.

Circuit Court Judge Patricia Fix read the list of charges Calhoun faces case by case. The most serious counts related to an alleged home invasion the night of Aug. 18, 2020, when authorities said Calhoun broke into a Round Lake Park home and punched a woman several times until she managed to flee the house.

Fix said that act was a Class X offense, which brings a mandatory sentencing range of six to 30 years in prison upon conviction. He was also charged with criminal trespass and domestic battery in the incident.

In a 2019 case, Calhoun was charged with twice violating terms of his child sex offender status from previous cases by loitering near a Libertyville school, where children under 18 were present.

He faces separate counts of that charge for being present in a park, also in Libertyville, where children under 18 were present.

He also pleaded not guilty to a new case from this year, in which he is charged with violating an order of protection on April 29, when he allegedly attempted to contact a person who had a no-contact order against him.

Calhoun participated in the virtual hearing from Lake County Jail, but his defense attorney, Evan Atwood, formally entered not guilty pleas to all of the charges against Calhoun. Assistant State's Attorney Eduardo Zermeno is the lead prosecutor on the case.

Fix set an initial trial date for Calhoun of Aug. 16, as well as an in-person case management conference July 22.
