Elected by the Circuit Judges of the 19th Judicial Circuit, Judge Mark L. Levitt will serve at the Circuit Judges’ pleasure as Chief Judge for a term commencing on January 3, 2022 and terminating January 1, 2023. “It is truly an honor to have been selected by my fellow judges to serve as Chief Judge of the 19th Judicial Circuit. I thank them for the trust and confidence they have placed in me. I will do my best to continue the tradition of excellence demonstrated by my predecessors. I look forward to working with my judicial colleagues, our justice and County partners, and continuing to serve the people of Lake County in my new role,” said Judge Levitt.
Judge Levitt was elected Circuit Judge for the Fourth Subcircuit of the 19th Judicial Circuit in the November 2010 general election. When he began his career on the bench, he was assigned to preside over the domestic violence courtroom, he then served as the criminal felony backup judge, and was appointed the Presiding Judge of the criminal misdemeanor and traffic division. Currently, Levitt is serving in the role of Deputy Chief Judge while assigned to the felony division. Prior to his election to the bench, Levitt worked in the Law Office of the Cook County Public Defender where he served in the Office’s Homicide Task Force.
Judge Levitt earned both his undergraduate and Juris Doctorate degrees from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1987 and 1990 respectively. Judge Levitt teaches in a variety of settings and was appointed by the Supreme Court to serve as Vice-Chair of the Circuit Court Clerk Education Committee of the Illinois Judicial College. He is a member of the Illinois Judges Association, the Illinois State Bar Association, and the Lake County Bar Association. He is a member of the Deerfield Rotary, the Deerfield Lions, and a former member of the Deerfield Public School District 109 School Board. Judge Levitt volunteers for a variety of charitable organizations and was a former league president of the Deerfield Youth Baseball Association. The Chief Judge election took place at a Circuit Judges Meeting at the courthouse on Wednesday, June 9, 2021.
