How to Cope with a Pandemic Bully (and not be one yourself)

divider

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to increased stress for people across the country. New precautions like social distancing and mask wearing have made people hyper-aware of their own actions and the actions of others. An April 2020 survey of 1,500 people found, “51 percent of people admitted that they had already judged an acquaintance for not adhering to social distancing guidelines.” If someone is making you feel uncomfortable, keep the following in mind:

  • Say it nicely—don’t raise your voice.
  • Stay calm and focus on your message.
  • Set boundaries that you are comfortable with.
  • Think twice before you respond.
  • See when it’s better to mind your own business.
  • Have compassion.

Some people have experienced violence at work as a result of conflict over COVID-19 prevention measures. The CDC offers resources to limit COVID-19 workplace violence.

New State Mask Rules, Mitigation Measures in Region 4 and 7

New Mask Measures

On August 25, Governor J.B. Pritzker announced a new statewide mask order. This means people must wear masks at bars and restaurants while interacting with staff. Wear a mask when ordering, when food is served, and when picking up carry-out. Thank you for following this simple step to protect others and keep our businesses open!

Recently, Illinois Regions 4 and 7 have stepped up mitigation measures to prevent spread of COVID-19. This includes Will, Kankakee, Monroe, Randolph, Washington, Bond, and St. Clair counties. Both regions have new restrictions on bars, restaurants, meetings, social events, and gatherings, and organized group recreational activities. These measures are applied on a regional basis.

Does Public Charge Apply?

Public charge refers to an individual who is likely to become primarily dependent on the government for subsistence. The public charge rule only applies to people seeking entry to the country or green cards. COVID-19 prevention, testing, and treatment are not included in public charge. Public charge is also not applicable to pandemic assistance including rental and utility assistance and unemployment benefits. For more information on public charge, who it affects, and who it applies to, visit the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights Public Charge page. You can also check out the Public Charge Fact Sheet by Protecting Immigrant Families Illinois.

Depression in the Black Community

Video: Depression in the Black Community

All of us are facing stress as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. For communities of color, recent racial injustice has added to the stress. According to a report by the U.S Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health, “adult Black/African Americans are 20% more likely to report serious psychological distress, yet less likely to receive treatment.” This is in part due to stigma and other social determinants of health that impact communities of color. Groups like AACPG Lake County are working to address health disparities. Check out their recent Facebook Live on depression in the Black Community.
