Lake County Public Works Summer Newsletter
Summer Water Restrictions
From May 15 to Sept. 15 of each year, County ordinance prohibits the use of water for outside and landscaping purposes between the hours of 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. In addition, outside water use is restricted to certain days of the week. Even numbered addresses can use outside water on even numbered days, and odd numbered addresses on odd days. Typically, as we move into the later parts of summer, we have much hotter and drier conditions, which may lead to additional water-use restrictions.

2020 Water Quality Reports
As strong supporters of the Safe Drinking Water Act, Lake County Public Works releases annual water quality Consumer Confidence Reports for the 12 water systems they own and operate. These reports provide information about the quality of our drinking water as well as details on the source of our water and what it contains. All Lake County systems passed testing requirements for the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. Visit the water quality reports web page to read your report.

Rate Changes Effective Dec. 1, 2020
The Lake County Public Works Department is committed to providing the best service possible to all of its customers. Water and sewer service is incredibly important and is needed 24/7 in homes and businesses.
Last year, Lake County Public Works completed a system-wide analysis which indicated that there is a need to adjust water and sewer rates periodically to implement necessary infrastructure replacement projects and maintain our high quality of service. Water and sewer rates will next be adjusted starting Dec. 1, 2020 for all customers in the Public Works service areas. On average, customers will see an increase of a few dollars per month. In some areas where a customer’s water usage is low, they may see cost savings.
See how we use revenue from water bills to invest in our water and sewer system.
Capital Improvement Program
Revenue we receive from water and sewer bills completely funds our Capital Improvement Program (CIP) – which this year features a lot of projects! This program identifies funding to plan, design and construct projects that are necessary to preserve, modernize and expand the water and waste water systems under the jurisdiction of Lake County government.
One project as part of the CIP was to upgrade the Hawthorn Center reservoir. Originally built in 1973 to provide water service and fire protection for the mall, the reservoir now serves as an important part of the Vernon Hills water system. Watch this video to see some of the upgrades and learn how Lake County Public Works can now monitor the reservoir at all times from anywhere.

See Sanitary Sewer Cleaning in Action
One way Lake County Public Works ensures continued service and eliminates adverse environmental impacts is by keeping our sanitary sewer pipes clean. Instead of using chemicals, water is sprayed at a high velocity against the internal pipe walls, removing accumulated grease, debris, and sediment. Watch this video to see this work in action as crews clean a 3.5-mile long pipe in Libertyville. |

Tip: Be Mindful of Cross Connections
A cross connection is an actual or potential connection between a public water supply system and any source of liquid, solid, or gas that could contaminate the drinking water supply. An example of where a cross connection may exist include swimming pools, private wells, fire sprinkler systems and irrigation systems. If you own one of these systems and are unsure if you have a “backflow preventer” installed, please call us at 847-377-7500. We are happy speak with you and can send a crew member to your home or business to check your connection.
