Lake County was recently recognized as having one of the 2020 Top 100 Best Fleets in the Americas by National Association of Fleet Administrators, Inc, Fleet Management Associations.
With over 38,000 public fleets in North America and thousands more in South America, the 100 Best Fleets in the Americas program recognizes fleet operations that have high levels of performance improvement and innovation within the public fleet industry.
Lake County's fleet consists of vehicles that includes Sheriff's Office squad cars, Health Department vehicles to transport patients, cars to drive to health and building inspections, and snow plows. The Lake County Division of Transportation (LCDOT) has an innovative team that works everyday on Lake County's fleet by providing maintenance, identifying safety opportunities, and implementing solutions to reduce the County's carbon emissions.
LCDOT's operations were evaluated in several categories including: the use of technology and information, staff development, performance culture, accountability, and collaboration.
Here are a few initiatives that demonstrated LCDOT's effectiveness:
- Began installing idle-reduction software in County-owned vehicles. This lowers a vehicles RPMs when its stationary, reducing carbon emissions and fuel consumption.
- Added 14 low emission vehicles to its fleet in 2020, leading to an approximately 72 percent reduction in tailpipe emissions.
- Created a cross functional committee so technicians can help guide decisions for the five year vehicle and equipment replacement plan.
- LCDOT regularly tracks performance, inventory and alternative vehicle usage to make data driven decisions so that effective predictive maintenance can be done.
