April 22, 2020
Today, Earth Day is widely recognized as the largest secular observance in the world, marked by more than a billion people every year. It’s seen as “a day of action to change human behavior and create global, national and local policy changes” Although the current times have been difficult and challenging, they have also afforded us all an opportunity to care for each other, all creatures who dwell here, and the home we all reside on, Earth. With that in mind, and to celebrate 50 years of Earth Day, SWALCO wanted to offer a few ideas that may help you on this journey of celebration, change and care. We hope you’ll find that taking part in actions like this, will impact not only your home, habitat and community, but YOU. We invite you and encourage you to help us celebrate this Earth Day 2020 and help us write the next chapters of life here on this beautiful planet, our home, Earth. SWALCO continues to work with organizations and communities around the region and wishes all a very Happy Earth Day!

Compost – Globally, if food waste could be represented as its own country, it would be the third largest greenhouse gas emitter in the world. This year's Earth Day theme is Climate Action, and composting is one of the best and easiest actions we can take. …. Participate in backyard composting (whether you garden or not) or if your town offers a program, please consider signing up and participating. Compost fortifies the soil, reduces the need for synthetic fertilizers, holds water, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and saves our landfills!! SWALCO has offered backyard compost bins and rain barrels at reduced prices for many years. Due to the current times, we are not sure when sales will be able to be offered again. Keep an eye out for updates. We also have been working with local schools, so keep a lookout for new info on our school and education programs. Please visit SWALCO’s site to find out more, and if your town has a food scrap collection program. Sign up now if you are not already enrolled!
