Lake County, Ill. — The Lake County Health Department is reporting 292 additional cases of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) and nine new deaths in Lake County since Friday. This brings the total number of Lake County COVID-19 cases to 2,224 including 80 deaths (as of April 20, 2020, 1:30 p.m.).

The nine deaths reported include:

  • One man in his 40s with underlying medical conditions
  • Two men in their 50s, one with underlying medical conditions
  • One woman in her 60s
  • Two men and one woman in their 70s, all with underlying medical conditions
  • One man in his 90s with underlying medical conditions
  • One man age 100+ with underlying medical conditions

The Health Department is investigating 27 long-term care facilities in the county that have two or more positive cases. These 27 facilities have a combined total of 372 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 49 deaths.

“Our Health Department continues to focus a tremendous amount of effort on long-term care facilities in Lake County, doing everything we can to protect our most vulnerable residents,” said Lake County Health Department Executive Director Mark Pfister. “Each facility in our county has a dedicated liaison who provides guidance to help prevent COVID-19 infections from occurring, and for any facility with a confirmed case, a Communicable Disease investigator provides daily support.”

The Health Department routinely communicates with long-term care facilities to assure they are following best practices to prevent COVID-19 infections. In any facility with a positive COVID-19 case, the Health Department offers personal protective equipment (PPE) to assure the facility has an adequate supply, and a Communicable Disease investigator is in daily contact with the facility to trace contacts of infected individuals, to assist in monitoring residents and staff for respiratory symptoms, and to advise the facility on mitigation actions they need to take to prevent further spread of the virus
