Health Department Coronavirus Update

Lake County, Ill. — The Lake County Health Department is reporting 80 additional cases of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) and six new deaths in Lake County. This brings the total number of Lake County COVID-19 cases to 1,124, including 29 deaths (as of April 9, 2020, 1:15 p.m.).

The six new deaths reported include:

  • Two men in their 50s, one of whom had underlying health conditions
  • One man and one woman in their 80s, both with underlying health conditions
  • One man and one woman in their 90s, both with underlying health conditions

The Health Department is investigating 22 long-term care facilities in the county that have two or more positive cases. These 22 facilities have a combined total of 199 confirmed COVID-19 cases.

As of April 9 at 3 p.m., three Lake County hospitals have reported in the State system that they are at capacity for Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds. Capacity numbers fluctuate by the hour, and at this time there is sufficient bed and ventilator capacity in Lake County hospitals. The Health Department continues to work closely with area hospitals and the Regional Hospital Coordination Center to assess patient care needs.

"The next couple of weeks will be exceptionally trying for residents of Lake County as we see the numbers of COVID-19 cases and deaths continue to climb," said Lake County Health Department Executive Director Mark Pfister. "Our Public Health Emergency Operations Center and the leadership of Lake County are prepared for this increase and continue to use every available resource to protect the public’s health. We urge every resident to stay home and save lives. Continue taking every precaution, not only to keep yourself healthy, but to protect our vulnerable populations and reduce the burden on our healthcare system. We will get through this together."
