14th Street Project Update - Roundabout to Open Nov. 4

North Chicago/Waukegan, IL - The Lake County Division of Transportation (LCDOT) is scheduled to open the new roundabout at 14th Street and Dugdale Street on Monday, Nov. 4.

Roundabouts provide safer and more efficient traffic flow in many locations because traffic moves slower and in only one direction. That means there are fewer crashes, the crashes are less severe, and traffic flows smoothly. Roundabouts also provide air quality improvements by reducing idling time because traffic flows continuously rather than constantly starting and stopping.

While work will continue on the 14th Street project through 2020, the roundabout will be open to motorists on Nov. 4. Work will continue to finish the sidewalk, bike path, and landscaping adjacent to the roundabout as weather allows.

14th Street Roundabout Almost Complete

Roundabout construction is almost complete. It opens to motorists Nov. 4.

Thank you for your patience!
LCDOT would like to thank motorists for their patience during this road closure - we know it was difficult. Construction of the roundabout was scheduled to last about 90 calendar days. LCDOT anticipated that this closure would be disruptive to traffic, so we worked very closely with the contractor to remain on schedule. Thanks to the construction team for their dedication to the timeline.

14th Street Project Moving Forward
With the roundabout complete, the rest of the roadway work is scheduled for 2020. The reconstruction of 14th Street from IL 131 to Jackson Street in North Chicago and Waukegan will feature a "road diet," where four lanes will be reduced to three, providing one lane in each direction and a center turn lane. Traffic volumes at this location no longer support four lanes, and this concept makes room available to build non-motorized facilities such as a sidewalk on the south side and a bike path on the north side. The pedestrian accommodations will also provide a new continuous trail connection between Greenbelt Forest Preserve and the Robert McClory Bike Path. The center turn lane will enhance safety for the many turning vehicles in the roadway, and the off-street pedestrian facilities will improve safety for pedestrians and bikers.

Updates on progress are posted regularly on the project website. For more information, visit 14thStProject.com.
