Health Department Announces New Director
of Health Informatics and Technology

Lake County, Ill.—The Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center is pleased to announce that Jefferson McMillan-Wilhoit has been appointed as its Director of Health Informatics and Technology. McMillan-Wilhoit has served the Health Department since July of 2018, most recently as Interim Information Technology Director. Throughout his career, McMillan-Wilhoit has focused on innovative ways to leverage informatics and technology to empower the disadvantaged and underserved, a passion he will continue in his new role.

“It is my belief that informatics and technology can empower people to live healthier lives,” said McMillan-Wilhoit about his new role. “I am excited to continue to enhance the Health Department’s capabilities and build a world-class Informatics and Technology team that will serve our staff, community partners, and the residents of Lake County.”

As Health Informatics and Technology Director, McMillan-Wilhoit will work to improve the Department’s use of technology across all programs and integrate real-time information into the decision making process of staff and community members. He will oversee the development and implementation of the Lake County Community Health Improvement Plan and the Health Department Strategic Plan.

Before joining the team at the Health Department, McMillan-Wilhoit worked for Northwestern University in Chicago and Children’s National Health Center in Washington, D.C., focusing on the application of data science in clinical and public health decision making, specifically relating to conditions that impact the community. His experience includes building enterprise data warehouses for two large, multi-site health systems and developing innovative approaches to working with data to make it easier to understand.

McMillan-Wilhoit holds a bachelor’s degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and received graduate training in epidemiology and biostatistics from the Johns Hopkins University. He and his wife currently live in Skokie, where they are active participants in their community. McMillan-Wilhoit currently serves as the co-chair of the Epidemiology and Health Informatics section of the Northern Illinois Public Health Consortium, the chair of the Epidemiology section of the Illinois Public Health Association, and a member of the ePublic Health and Health Informatics working group of the National Association of City and County Health Officials.
