Statement regarding preliminary hearing continuance surrounding Old Mill Creek
(Lake County, IL) A statement regarding the continuance of a preliminary hearing from Lake County State's Attorney Michael G. Nerheim:
A preliminary hearing in courtroom T-110 involving the five individuals charged with felony murder for their involvement in a crime on Edwards Road near Old Mill Creek was continued until Sept. 19 by agreement between the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office and the various defense attorneys for the five individuals. The purpose of the continuance was to give the attorneys time needed to review the hundreds of pages of police reports and other evidence that continues to come in from multiple law enforcement agencies involved.
We have been in repeated communication with attorneys for the five individuals, and we continue to review the evidence, facts and background of the offenders in order to make appropriate formal charging decisions.
At this time, no other details of the case will be released. When my office can provide additional details, we will continue to do so with as much transparency as we can be under the law.
I want to reiterate a passage from our previous statement: the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office will continue to evaluate this case and work towards a resolution that is fair to all parties involved, while also fulfilling our obligation to keep our community safe. In doing so, I will consider the facts, circumstances, any mitigating factors, and the ages of the offenders.
