Oak Forest man indicted on 23 counts of predatory criminal sexual assault, child pornography
(Lake County, IL) An Oak Forest man was indicted by a Lake County Grand Jury Wednesday on 23 criminal felony counts that include charges of predatory criminal sexual assault of a victim under 13 years of age and child pornography.
Jason Akai, 44, of the 15000 block of Oak Forest Road, was charged with two Class X felony counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child. If found guilty at trial, Akai could be sentenced from 6 years to 30 years in prison on each count.
In addition, Akai was charged with 19 Class X felony counts of possession of child pornography, and two Class 1 felony counts of possession of child pornography. If found guilty at trial, each Class X count could result in Akai being sentenced from 6 years to 30 years in prison. Each Class 1 felony carries a prison sentence from 4 years to 15 years. The charges are not probationable.
"Predatory criminal sexual assault and child pornography crimes like these are among the worst crimes imaginable," said Lake County State's Attorney Michael G. Nerheim. "My office is committed to punishing child sex offenders to the fullest extent of the law."
Charges for Akai and co-defendant Kimberly Schubert, 43, of Buffalo Grove, came to light after the Department of Children and Family Services alerted Buffalo Grove Police of a tip they received from an out-of-state therapist.
Investigators working to support the charges against Schubert determined pornographic images had been distributed to Akai. The Buffalo Grove Police Department, the Oak Forest Police Department, and the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office, worked together to obtain a search warrant for Akai’s residence where evidence was recovered.
Akai was taken into custody on June 20, and is scheduled to appear before Lake County Circuit Court Judge Victoria Rossetti for arraignment on July 24. He currently remains held in Lake County Jail on $750,000 bail.
Schubert was taken into custody on May 30 and subsequently charged with two Class X felonies for predatory criminal sexual assault with the victim being under 13, 11 Class X felonies for child pornography and two Class 1 felony counts of child pornography. On July 10, Schubert pleaded not guilty to the charges in front of Rossetti, and her trial date was set for Oct. 21. She is due to appear in court on Aug. 27 for a case management conference.
The public is reminded that individuals charged with any crime are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
