Summer days seem to have finally arrived! I had a great time seeing so many of you at the Libertyville Days Parade and am looking forward to the Mundelein Community Days Parade on July 7. I’m also excited to celebrate summer by attending the annual Town and Country Garden Club Hidden Gems Garden Walk on Saturday, June 29. I am always so impressed by the planning and hard work that go into making such delightful gardens and feel very fortunate to be able to enjoy them up close. I think everyone benefits from spending some time relaxing and enjoying the outdoors.
Speaking of the outdoors, the Lake County Forest Preserve recently released 91 Blanding’s turtle hatchlings into local wetlands. Blandings turtles are native to our area but were designated as endangered in 2009 due to habitat loss, poaching and pressure from predators. In 2010, the Forest Preserve instituted an official recovery program for the turtles. |

Turtle hatchlings are kept safe until large enough to survive on their own in the wild. Blandings turtles can live to be over 80 years old and are an important part of our local ecosystem. The number of turtles in our area has tripled to around 522 since the program began. Learn more about this important program or how to adopt your own turtle and be a “Turtle Champion.”
One night last week there was a severe house fire on my block along with a major water main rupture. I want to thank all the first responders and public works staff for your hard work, professionalism and steadiness in the face of dangerous circumstances. There were some very scary moments as everything unfolded, but you kept everyone safe and calm and literally worked all night to put out the fire and fix the water main. No one was hurt in the fire, and the family dog was saved thanks to the first responders on the scene. Thank you for all you do every single day to keep us all safe.

Initial Ethylene Oxide Air Monitoring Results Received
Preliminary results from the first three days of outdoor air monitoring for ethylene oxide (EtO) near Vantage Specialty Chemicals in Gurnee and Medline Industries in Waukegan indicate the presence of EtO at elevated levels at one location in Waukegan, and at varying and lower levels at all other sites.
Because this initial data represents only three days of sampling, conclusions about potential impacts to health cannot yet be made, and monitoring is continuing. However, the results show that the highest levels were detected at the sampling location nearest the Medline facility, with the highest reading being 10 ug/m3 collected on June 7 and 8. Learn more about the initial air monitoring results.
To learn more about ethylene oxide, visit the Lake County Health Department's website.
