If you are registering your child in school or applying for a real ID, you might need a certified copy of a birth or marriage record. If you are entitled to the record, you can order the record directly from the county clerk where the event took place. This is the best way to protect your wallet and your identity.
Many third-party online services offer to acquire the record on your behalf after you complete their application requiring sensitive or personal information, such as a Social Security Number. The vendor obtains the record from the appropriate county clerk – just as you could – and then charges you 10 times more than the county clerk’s rate. Carefully read the supplier’s terms of service as they may keep a copy of your requested record for themselves or not issue a refund if the order cannot be processed because access to the record is restricted.
In-person
The Lake County Clerk is the official recordkeeper for all birth, death, marriage, and civil union events in Lake County, Illinois. If legally allowed, you can purchase the needed copies by stopping in our office during weekday business hours. Routinely, most customers are processed and out the door in less than 30 minutes.
By mail
If you can’t visit our office, wish to order by mail, and pay with a check:
- Download a mail-in application form by visiting LakeCountyClerk.info and clicking on the Vital Records tab,
- Mail your completed form to our address on the form,
- Provide a copy of the required valid identification, and
- Include payment of check or money order.
- Our normal processing is 2 working days once your request is received by our office, and
- Your document is mailed to you via first class U.S. mail.
Fast shipping, credit card payment, or email request
If you require expedited shipping, wish to pay by credit card, or are sending us a request by fax or email:
- Use our only online service partner, VitalChek (www.vitalchek.com) who adds a $7 processing fee plus shipping charges if you choose overnight or two-day delivery.
